What is health and lifestyle? My goal is to help you live a life of freedom from pain, and stress.
If you were asked to write out a list of your top 10 priorities, where would ‘health and wellness’ be on that list?
Unfortunately, for many of us, it is way down on the list, so be honest when you write out your list.

I have a question for you. Do you drive a car?  Do you put gas in your car, take your car to a garage to be maintained on a regular basis, replace the oil, check the tires etc.? We know if we do not maintain our cars, they will break down and cause us many challenges along with stress.

Yet we expect our body to keep functioning, surviving on an inadequate diet. Then, when we become sick, whether it is something as simple as a cold, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, or more serious such as high blood pressure, a stroke, heart attack, we wonder why! Why Me?   Typically we wait until something happens before we take action. Good health results from being Pro-active in four main areas.

1 Water – hydration – how much?
2 Food – nutrition
3 Exercise – walk up that flight of stairs
4 Stress – a result of the lack of the above

Over the next little while I will help you make some good decisions with your health and show you simple ways to be Pro-active.

As the lighthouse guides the ship into the safety of the harbour, I will guide you through the maze, to the safety of good health.

Hydrate and Stay Healthy on Vacation

You’ve been playing in the water all day with your family, and yet, you feel weak, light headed, and have developed one nasty headache.  Is it too much vacation….or not enough fluids.

Dehydration occurs when you loose more fluids than you take in. Water is essential to how your body functions. It forms the basis for all body fluids including blood and digestive juices. It aids in getting important nutrients where they need to go, and helps eliminate waste. The numbers on the daily quantity goes back and forth between experts – but you do need to put in as much as you loose. Most people, simply through every day activities, will loose more than 10 cups of water every day. Plus you don’t only loose water; you loose important electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium.

So it’s important to plan your daily activities – hiking, car travel, beach time, boating, canoeing, or camping – to include water and sport drink breaks. Water is the best form of hydration and sport drinks help to replace electrolytes. Infants, children and older people are most likely to experience dehydration. Make sure to monitor their beverage intake. A pop or soda as a treat is Ok, but it will not provide hydration.

Adults, …alcoholic beverages don’t count towards hydration either; in fact they will help to dehydrate you!

So how much water should you take?
Divide your weight in half =ounces. Example Weight: 160 lbs divide by 2 = 80 This person needs to drink 80 oz. of water per day

The best way to know if you are hydrated is by your urine. If it is clear, you’re properly hydrated. If it is dark yellow or amber you are dehydrated.  Enjoy your summer and stay hydrated, this includes your pets too

What is health and lifestyle?

At the Natural Way my goal is to help reduce your stressors, which cause you pain and discomfort and help you feel GOOD.

With the cooler days, your feet no longer have the freedom of sandals and walking barefoot. Instead they are ‘wrapped up’ and ‘constricted’ in your shoes. Reflexology not only feels wonderful it also helps to detox your body leaving you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and relaxed.

What else does Reflexology do?
• Reduces stress
• Breaks down tension
• Lowers blood pressure
• Stimulates circulation
• Improves digestion
• Normalizes your body’s metabolism and encourages the natural healing process
• Removes toxins from the body

What can you expect? A warm quiet atmosphere, with a warm foot soak containing essential oils for your needs. Followed by your Reflexology session, completed with a leg massage. Along with your reflexology, you will also be receiving energy healing and relaxation for a truly unique experience.

All About Organic

What does Organic really mean? What does it take to be organic? Are there different levels of organic?
Organic farming refers to the way farmers grow and process their crops. It starts with an attitude and preservation of the ‘cycle of life’ between soil, plants, animals and humans. Emphasis is placed on renewable resources, soil and water conservation.

Conventional Farming

Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth
Apply natural fertilizers, like manure or compost, to feed soil and plants
Spray insecticides to reduce pests and disease

Organic Farming

Use beneficial insects and birds, reproductive disruption, or traps to reduce pests
Use chemical herbicides to manage weeds
Rotate crops, turn the soil, weed by hand, or put down mulch to manage weeds

A recent report from The Organic Centre reviewed 97 studies published since 1980 comparing nutrient levels in organic and conventional foods. The conclusion: Organic fruits and vegetable deliver more nutrients per average serving, including protective phytonutrients like polyphenols and antioxidants pigments. Check out their site: www.organic-center.org

Check the label 100% Organic – Product has no synthetic ingredients   95% Organic – Product contains at least 95% organic  70% organic – Product contains at least 70% organic material Less than 70% -Cannot use the word ‘organic’ on their label, though they can include organic items in their product.

• Buy products in season, eg. local farmer’s markets.
• Wash all fruits & veggies thoroughly under running water.
• “Natural” is not synonymous with organic, thought the USDA label may appear on minimally processed foods.

If it is not in the soil….. It is not in your food.

Aromatherapy

Stress in and out of the work place.

Most people work 40+ hours a week, lead busy lives, balance home, children and work. Do you use a computer, skip meals, use fast foods or processed foods?  We live in a fast paced world of hi-tech and emotional unrest. As a result we become irritable and frustrated with our life and or work, which in turn creates stress.

Research has shown that Stress creates many of today’s health challenges. Do you, or someone you know, suffer from headaches, migraine, muscle aches and pains, digestive disorders, fatigue, cardio vascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks, fibromyalgia?

Identify the stressors in your work place, home or relationships.  • What can you do to change a situation?  • Is there someone you can turn to, ask for help? Eliminating stress completely from your life is impossible, eg. the loss of a loved one, however there are ways to manage and reduce stress.

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils for health and well-being, and is used to describe a particular branch of herbal healing. Essential oils are aromatic extracts derived from the leaves, flowers, fruit, wood, bark and roots of plants and trees. They are natural multifaceted compounds, slow acting, and are best used as a preventative, complimentary form of health and well-being. The action on the body is holistic (they work on the body as a whole), combining mental, physical and emotional aspects. Essential oils work together to strengthen the immune system and aid your body’s own healing abilities.

Globally, Aromatherapy is considered the #1 treatment for stress relief and can be used in the form of massage, facial, relaxing bath, lotion, or atomizer.

Take some time out for yourself, allow yourself to relax, regenerate and recoup.

Here are some of my favourite oils for relieving stress:
Geranium, Bergamot, Lavender, Frankincense, Clary Sage, Marjoram, Ylang-Ylang.  A synergistic blend  (three to four oils in carrier oil) is always better than single oil.   Rosemary, Basil, Peppermint are great for focus.

A soothing Aromatherapy massage with natural essential oils known for their therapeutic properties is an excellent choice for reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being.

Grant me the courage to change the things in my life I can change, the serenity to accept the things I can’t change, and the wisdom to know the difference.
